Dr. Jamie P. Loggins has agreed to pay $629,056.76 to resolve allegations of violating the federal False Claims Act (FCA) by prescribing medically unnecessary orthotic braces. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maine announced the settlement, which addresses claims that Loggins submitted false claims to Medicare from September 2018 to November 2022.
According to the allegations, Dr. Loggins, collaborating with a telemedicine company, prescribed orthotic braces based on intake forms without a valid prescriber-patient relationship or medical necessity. This violated Medicare guidelines requiring services to be medically reasonable and necessary. The FCA imposes liability on individuals who knowingly submit false claims for payment to the government.
Dr. Loggins cooperated with the investigation and did not admit liability as part of the settlement. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General, conducted the investigation.
