The opioid crisis has been an ever-present and ever-growing concern in the United States, especially with the rise of synthetic opioids like fentanyl. In a bold and historic move, the Biden administration has taken decisive action against the key players in the global fentanyl supply chain.

Targeting the Root: Chinese Suppliers
In a recent crackdown, the administration charged eight Chinese firms for their roles in advertising, manufacturing, and distributing precursor chemicals essential for producing synthetic opioids, including fentanyl. This initiative underscores the US government’s commitment to addressing one of the nation’s most dire public health crises.

During a press briefing, Attorney General Merrick Garland succinctly illustrated the grim picture, noting, “…this global fentanyl supply chain, which ends with the deaths of Americans, often starts with chemical companies in China.”

Sanctions and Indictments
In conjunction with these charges, the Justice Department has indicted 12 executives allegedly involved in drug trafficking activities. Additionally, the Treasury Department imposed sanctions on 28 entities, predominantly from China, with a few based in Canada. The goal is simple yet vital: sever their ties to the US financial system, making any business dealings with them in the US impossible.

Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo summarized the initiative’s overarching goal, highlighting that it seeks to target not only those directly involved but also entities and individuals who profit indirectly from this illicit trade.

The Fentanyl Menace
Fentanyl’s potency has directly contributed to the sharp rise in drug overdose deaths. According to CDC data, there was a staggering sevenfold increase in drug overdose deaths from 2015 to 2021, with fentanyl accounting for two-thirds of these fatalities. To put things into perspective, the current death rate is tenfold compared to the peak of the 1988 crack epidemic.

Government Response and Bipartisan Efforts
To combat this menace, there have been calls for stiffer penalties for those found in possession of fentanyl. The Biden administration has channeled significant federal funds towards initiatives that support at-risk populations and ensure easy access to naloxone – an antidote to opioid overdoses.

In the Senate, a bipartisan effort is underway to declare fentanyl trafficking a national emergency. This move will empower the Treasury to employ its sanctioning powers more effectively, potentially curbing the drug’s proliferation. Proposed legislation encompasses reporting requirements and enables the president to confiscate sanctioned properties tied to fentanyl trafficking, thereby bolstering law enforcement activities.
