June, 2024: In a significant case of healthcare fraud, Dr. Gustavo Kinrys, a psychiatrist from Wellesley, has been sentenced to over eight years in prison. Kinrys was found guilty of defrauding Medicare and private insurers of over $19 million by billing for treatments he never provided. His fraudulent activities funded a lavish lifestyle, including multi-million-dollar homes and luxury jewelry. Kinrys, who owned Advanced TMS Associates, billed for thousands of non-existent transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and psychotherapy sessions. He even billed for treatments while vacationing abroad, claiming to have worked more than 24 hours a day. Kinrys was convicted of multiple counts of wire fraud, false statements, and obstruction of justice. He has been ordered to pay restitution and forfeiture, with the exact amounts to be determined later.
